Biting Insects

Biting insects such as mosquitoes, bed bugs, and fleas are not only a nuisance but can also pose serious health risks to humans and pets, making effective control essential for maintaining a safe and comfortable environment.

Common Species

Mosquitoes (Culicidae family)

Known for their itchy bites, mosquitoes are prevalent in areas with standing water, where they breed. Female mosquitoes feed on blood, which they need for egg production. They are also vectors for diseases such as West Nile virus, Zika virus, and malaria.

Bed Bugs (Cimex lectularius, Pictured above)

Small, reddish-brown, and oval-shaped, bed bugs are notorious for feeding on human blood while their hosts sleep. They are commonly found in bedding, furniture, and crevices in walls, and can quickly spread within homes and businesses.

Fleas (Siphonaptera order, Pictured below)

Fleas are tiny, wingless parasites that feed on the blood of mammals and birds. Known for their ability to jump long distances, fleas can be found on pets, in carpets, and in upholstery. Flea bites can cause severe itching and allergic reactions in both humans and animals.

Risk & Danger

can cause a variety of problems, including:

Signs of Infestation

  • Mosquito Bites: One of the most common signs of a mosquito infestation is the appearance of red, itchy bites, particularly after spending time outdoors. You may also notice an increased presence of mosquitoes around dusk or near sources of standing water like birdbaths, ponds, or clogged gutters.
  • Bed Bug Bites and Fecal Stains: Bed bug bites often appear as clusters or lines of red, itchy welts, usually found on exposed skin. Other signs include small rust-colored stains (bed bug excrement) on bedding or furniture, shed skins, or the bugs themselves hiding in mattress seams, headboards, or cracks in walls.
  • Flea Bites and Pet Scratching: Flea bites typically appear as small, itchy red spots, often located on ankles, legs, or waistlines. Excessive scratching and biting by pets, combined with the presence of flea dirt (tiny black specks) in pet bedding or carpets, are strong indicators of a flea infestation. Fleas may also be seen jumping on or around pets.

Prevention Tips

Seal Entry Points: Inspect the building for gaps, cracks, and holes in the exterior walls that pests can use to enter.

Keep Food Secure: Store food in airtight containers, and clean up spills and crumbs immediately. Don’t leave pet food out overnight.

Eliminate Clutter: Pests thrive in cluttered environments where they can find hiding spots and nesting materials. Keep areas tidy, especially basements, attics, and storage rooms.

Maintain Landscaping: Trim back trees, shrubs, and dead plant matter that touch your building, as these can provide pathways for pests to enter. Keep firewood and debris away from your building.
