Rodents

Mice &

Rats

Rodents, specifically mice and rats, are among the most common and troublesome pests found in homes and businesses.

Common Species

House Mouse (Mus musculus)

Small, with a body length of 2.5-3.75 inches, and a tail nearly as long as its body. House mice are typically light brown to gray and are known for their inquisitive nature.

Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus)

Larger than mice, Norway rats have a body length of 7-9.5 inches, with a tail shorter than their body. They are typically brown or gray, with a stocky body and a blunt nose.

Roof Rat (Rattus rattus)

imilar in size to the Norway rat but more slender, with a body length of 6-8 inches and a long, scaly tail that is longer than its body. Roof rats are usually black or dark brown and are excellent climbers.

Risk & Danger

Rodents

can cause a variety of problems, including:

Health Risks

Rodents are known carriers of diseases such as hantavirus, leptospirosis, and salmonella. Their droppings, urine, and saliva can contaminate food and surfaces, posing serious health risks to humans and pets.

Structural Damage

Mice and rats chew on wiring, which can lead to electrical fires. They can also damage insulation, drywall, and even the foundation of a building by burrowing.

Rapid Reproduction

Rodents breed quickly, with a single pair capable of producing dozens of offspring in just a few months. This rapid reproduction makes it crucial to address infestations as soon as possible.

Signs of Infestation

Rodents can cause a variety of problems, including:

Rodents create nests from shredded paper, fabric, and other soft materials. Nests are often found in hidden areas like wall cavities, attics, or behind appliances.

Rodents chew on wood, wires, plastic, and other materials to keep their teeth sharp. Gnaw marks can be found on furniture, walls, and food packaging.

Rats often leave greasy rub marks along walls and floorboards from the oils in their fur as they follow consistent pathways.

Mice and rats leave droppings along their runways, near food sources, and in nesting areas. Mouse droppings are small (about 1/4 inch) and rod-shaped, while rat droppings are larger and often curved.

Scratching, scurrying, and gnawing sounds coming from walls, ceilings, or attics, especially at night, indicate rodent activity.

Prevention Tips

Seal Entry Points: Inspect the building for gaps, cracks, and holes in the exterior walls that pests can use to enter.

Keep Food Secure: Store food in airtight containers, and clean up spills and crumbs immediately. Don’t leave pet food out overnight.

Eliminate Clutter: Pests thrive in cluttered environments where they can find hiding spots and nesting materials. Keep areas tidy, especially basements, attics, and storage rooms.

Maintain Landscaping: Trim back trees, shrubs, and dead plant matter that touch your building, as these can provide pathways for pests to enter. Keep firewood and debris away from your building.
