Wildlife

Wildlife pests like raccoons, squirrels, and skunks can cause property damage, spread disease, and create sanitation issues when they invade residential areas. Their interactions with humans can pose safety risks.

Common Species

Raccoon (Procyon lotor)

Intelligent nocturnal animals with masked faces and dexterous paws. Raid trash cans, gardens, or pet food left outdoors. May invade attics, chimneys, or crawl spaces, especially during breeding seasons.

Squirrel (Family Sciuridae)

Species like the Eastern Gray Squirrel enter homes to nest in attics or walls. Known to chew through wiring and insulation, posing fire hazards. Active during the day, gathering food and nesting materials.

Skunk (Family Mephitidae)

Identified by black and white fur and a defensive spray reaching up to 10 feet. Burrow under decks, sheds, or foundations. Carriers of rabies and other diseases.

Risk & Danger

can cause a variety of problems, including:

Signs of Infestation

  • Raccoons:
    • Damage: Knocked-over garbage cans, torn shingles, damaged vents.
    • Noises: Scratching, chattering, or thumping at night.
    • Tracks and Droppings: Footprints and feces in yards or around entry points.
  • Squirrels:
    • Gnaw Marks: On wood, siding, or electrical wires.
    • Nesting Materials: Shredded paper, leaves, insulation in attics.
    • Noises: Scampering during the day.
  • Skunks:
    • Holes: Small, conical holes in lawns from digging for grubs.
    • Odor: Pungent skunk spray near the home.
    • Tracks and Droppings: Indicate their travel paths.

Prevention Tips

Seal Entry Points: Inspect the building for gaps, cracks, and holes in the exterior walls that pests can use to enter.

Keep Food Secure: Store food in airtight containers, and clean up spills and crumbs immediately. Don’t leave pet food out overnight.

Eliminate Clutter: Pests thrive in cluttered environments where they can find hiding spots and nesting materials. Keep areas tidy, especially basements, attics, and storage rooms.

Maintain Landscaping: Trim back trees, shrubs, and dead plant matter that touch your building, as these can provide pathways for pests to enter. Keep firewood and debris away from your building.
